According to preliminary figures, 91,765 people died in Austria in 2022. “This is 10.7 percent more than the average of the last five years before the outbreak of the pandemic and also more than would have been expected due to the aging of the population,” Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas reported Thursday. Life expectancy is down from 2016 to 2019 for women at 83.7 and men at 79, but it is rising in the long-term trend.
The statistics for the previous year will still be somewhat higher, as deaths of Austrians living abroad are not yet included, and subsequent registrations by the registry offices are also still to be expected, as explained in the release. However, the preliminary number of deaths was similar to 2021, when 91,962 deaths were registered.
In Vienna, the difference from the five-year average from 2015 to 2019 was the smallest, at plus 6.1 percent deaths, while Vorarlberg recorded the largest deviation, at plus 16.5 percent. Across Austria, life expectancy for men increased slightly by 0.2 years, while it remained almost constant for women (minus 0.03 years). Thomas explained in 1951 that it was 67.8 years for women and 62.4 years for men.
Many deaths toward the end of the year
There were particularly large deaths in the last weeks of 2022 and already in the weeks of 2023. Compared with the five average for the same calendar weeks (week 52 to week 2) of the years before the Corona pandemic began, 32 percent more people died in week 52 of 2022, 29.8 percent more in week 1 of 2023 and 12.6 percent more in week 2 of 2023. The sharp increase in deaths coincided with the current flu wave, and thousands of new Corona infections are registered daily, Statistics Austria recently explained.
